Day 1: 25th April – Arrival and hike Ponta de Sao Lourenco

Upon arrival at Funchal Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by our guide and transferred to our hotel in the city. Once there, take some time to relax and settle in.

In the afternoon, gear up for an exciting adventure as we head out for a hike at Ponta de Sao Lourenco near Caniçal. This area is known for its stunning landscapes and breathtaking coastal views. The hike will take us along rugged cliffs and offer panoramic views of the Atlantic, making it a perfect introduction to the natural beauty of Madeira and is one of the most spectacular hikes in the region.

Duration: 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on pace and time spent enjoying the views.

Difficulty: Moderate – The trail is mostly well-maintained, but there are sections with steep inclines and rocky terrain.

Elevation Gain: 300 meters.

After a well-deserved break, and perhaps even a refreshing swim in the ocean, we’ll start our journey back along the trail. For a change of pace and a little extra adventure, you have the option to board a dinghy (speedboat) and enjoy a swift transfer along the coast. At Quinta do Lorde Marina we will relax and watch the sunset over the ocean—a beautiful and peaceful end to our first day!

Meals included: Welcome dinner

Accommodation: 5* Hotel Melia Madeira Mare (or similar)

Day 2: 26th April – Half Day Funchal & Monte Tour

We start our morning with an immersive visit to the local market where you can experience the vibrant culture and maybe pick up some unique souvenirs. Next, we’ll take a scenic cable car ride to the top of Monte, which offers breathtaking views of Funchal from above. It’s a peaceful way to see the city and the surrounding landscapes from a different perspective.

At the top, we’ll visit the Tropical Monte Palace Garden. This lush garden is a haven of exotic plants and stunning garden architecture, providing a serene environment to stroll and unwind. To add a little thrill to our morning, we’ll conclude with a traditional Toboggan ride. This unique and fun descent from Monte to Funchal is an exciting way to experience a piece of Madeiran history.

The afternoon will be spent at leisure; explore more of Funchal at your own pace, relax at the hotel, or perhaps enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Before dinner, we’ll re-group and head to the north of the island for an elegant evening of wine tasting. Day 3: 27th April – Full Day West Porto Moniz Jeep Tour

Today’s journey takes us through some of Madeira’s most picturesque and culturally rich locations. We’ll start by visiting Câmara de Lobos, a charming fishing village famous for its colourful boats and the spot where Winston Churchill used to paint. Here, you can soak up the local atmosphere and enjoy the beautiful seaside views.

Next, we’ll head to Cabo Girão, one of Europe’s highest cliffs, offering a spectacular lookout point with a glass skywalk. The view from here is truly breathtaking, overlooking the vast ocean and the rugged coastline below.

After that, we’ll make our way to Ribeira Brava, a quaint town known for its beautiful church and vibrant seaside promenade. We’ll continue our journey up to Encumeada and then to Sao Vicente, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore some local vineyards. Here, we will also enjoy a typical Madeiran Espetada lunch—a local specialty of marinated beef skewers grilled over an open fire, providing a flavourful insight into the island’s culinary traditions.

Following lunch, our next stop is Porto Moniz, renowned for its natural lava swimming pools. You’ll have some free time here to swim or relax by the water, enjoying the unique natural formations that make these pools a must-visit destination.

Day 4: 28th April – Full Day Pico Areeiro Hike or half day Pico Ruivo Hike

Today, we’ve planned two activities tailored to suit different levels of adventure and fitness, ensuring everyone has an unforgettable experience.

OPTION 1 – Pico Areeiro to Pico Ruivo

For our experienced hikers, there’s the option to embark on a full-day hike to Pico Ruivo which is one of Madeira’s most iconic and challenging treks. This 12km trek will take you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes Madeira has to offer, culminating in stunning panoramic views from the highest peak on the island.

The hike takes you along a rugged mountain ridge, offering breathtaking views of Madeira’s central mountain range. On clear days, you can see both the northern and southern coasts of the island, and the surrounding peaks appear dramatic and otherworldly, often rising above a sea of clouds.

A common highlight is walking above the clouds, where the mountains seem to float in a white sea of mist, creating a surreal experience.

Length: 10-12 km

Duration: 6-8 hours

Difficulty: Challenging. This hike involves steep ascents, descents, narrow paths, and sections with stairs – We highly recommend that you spend a few month training for this if you are going to attempt this route to maximise your experience.

Elevation Gain: Around 1,000 meters (including the ups and downs throughout the hike).

The Pico Areeiro to Pico Ruivo hike is one of Madeira’s most spectacular outdoor experiences, offering some of the best mountain views in Europe. While challenging, it’s also incredibly rewarding, with ever-changing vistas, rugged peaks, and the sense of achievement at standing on Madeira’s highest point. This hike is perfect for seasoned hikers or adventurous travelers looking for an unforgettable full-day adventure on the island.

OPTION 2 – Pico Ruivo

For those looking for a lighter activity, we offer a half-day walk from Achadas do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo. This shorter trek still provides the opportunity to experience the beauty of Madeira’s rugged terrain without the full-day commitment. After reaching Pico Ruivo, you can enjoy a well-deserved rest and a picnic lunch, which is included for both groups.

It’s a popular option for those who want to experience the island’s incredible mountain scenery without undertaking the more strenuous Pico Areeiro to Pico Ruivo trail. The trail offers breathtaking views of Madeira’s central mountains. You’ll see deep valleys, jagged volcanic peaks, and sweeping views of the island, including the northern and southern coastlines on clear days.

Length: 6 km

Duration: 2-3 hours

Difficulty: Moderate. The trail is well-maintained, with some elevation gain, but it’s manageable for most hikers with a good level of fitness.

Elevation Gain: 300 meters.

In the afternoon, we’ll relax and explore the gentler side of the island. Our visit includes a stop at Porto da Cruz, known for its striking black sand beach—a perfect place to unwind and soak in the coastal beauty.

We’ll return to the hotel late afternoon, giving you a brief period to freshen up and relax before our next adventure.

Early evening, we’ll board a catamaran for an evening on the water. This cruise offers a fantastic opportunity to look for whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. As we sail, enjoy the breathtaking sunset over the ocean—a truly magical experience. We’ll cap off the evening with a delicious meal aboard the boat, creating memories of a perfect day spent exploring and enjoying Madeira.

Accommodation: 5* Hotel Melia Madeira Mare (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
