Hiking in the Lake District
Our hiking weekend in the Lake District will be a mix of adventure, and some you time. It’s the perfect weekend to escape the everyday and hike some amazing scenic routes in the hills, overlooking the famous lakes below. You will need to be in good health and at a moderate level of fitness but the hikes will be at a leisurely pace. We will be lead by mountain leader Felicity Turner who has been hiking for many years and holds both mountaineering qualifications and a first aid certificate.
The Lake District is in the North-West of England, with Manchester to the South and Carlise to the North. England’s largest National Park is a gem of a place to visit. There are breathtaking lakes, soaring mountains – known locally as ‘fells’, picturesque valleys and even sandy coastline. Each lake and valley has a distinct character of its own. A landscape of adventure designed to challenge the imagination, from the exhilaration of the summits to the thrill of an open water swim.
There are few landscapes so loved by so many as those found in the English Lake District. Walks in the Lake District National Park are effortlessly beguiling. Nowhere else in England is the landscape so charming yet so dramatic at the same time and there’s no better way to see it than on foot. With hundreds of paths to explore, you can choose from gentle strolls around glistening lakes to hardy hikes high up in the Fells.

Day 1: Friday 3rd May – Arrive in the Lake District
Arrive in the beautiful Lake District anytime after 4pm. I will be there waiting to greet you in the main reception area.
Take a walk around the grounds and relax before joining us for some welcome drinks from 6pm in the bar.

MEALS INCLUDED: Dinner
Day 2: Saturday 4th May – Mountain Day
After a relaxed breakfast, we will meet our mountain leader Felicity who will be leading our adventures for the weekend – I can’t cross the road without getting lost so I though I’d better ask someone who can show us some Lake District highlights. What I can tell you though is that is is beautiful and there are heaps of gorgeous walks close by!
This is the day we will hike in the beautiful mountains with spectacular views in every direction. (weather depending!) We hope to walk from the hostel to avoid any park logistics. The bank holiday will see the Lake District really busy with visitors so to avoid any problems we will try to limit car transport. The area offers beautiful mountains with varied terrain including more challenging rocky sections, grasslands, as well as beautiful woodland and lakeside walks so we have plenty of adventurous options for a fun-filled packed day outside.
If the weather is kind, our day will end with a yoga session outside.
Early evening you are then invited to join me in the bar for drinks before dinner.
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 3: Sunday 5th May – Half Day Hike and Ambleside
Today’s hike will be a beautiful low level lakeside hike after yesterdays adventure that gives us a nice leg stretch. We will return around lunchtime.
The afternoon is at leisure – You could spend the afternoon in Ambleside shopping the hiking and outdoor shops – you will love them! Alternatively relax and stay at Rydal Hall and enjoy a delicious cake from the tea barn on the estate.
In the evening, will enjoy another dinner together and then take a short walk down the the Badger Bar in search for Badgers!
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Monday 6th May – Bid Farewell
Our weekend comes to an end after breakfast as we bid farewell to new found friends.
Today you could go paddle boarding, kayaking or take a cruise on Lake Windermere before heading home

The Accommodation – Rydal Hall
Our accommodation for the weekend is the lovely Rydal Hall in Ambleside. Rydal Hall is set in 30 acres, at the very heart of the English Lake District, a World Heritage Site. It was originally owned by the Fleming family and the first part of the Hall – which is now the bar area was built in 1600, followed by the south wing in 1789. During the Second World War, it was used as a school. Later Rydal Hall became a hotel and today it is owned by the Diocese of Carlisle.
There are many quirky and quiet spaces at Rydal where you will have the opportunity to relax and reflect- such as the oak panelled Library, intimate chapel or a visit to The Grot. Scattered around the grounds are various sculptures and other points of interest – making it fascinating to explore!
Each morning we will enjoy a delicious breakfast, and then after a day full of adventure this is also where we will enjoy home-cooked meals in the evenings.
