Hiking in the Peak District

Our hiking weekend in the Peak District will be fairly relaxed. It is the perfect weekend if you are new to hiking or are experienced. You will need to be in good health but the hikes will be leisurely and at a steady pace. We will be lead by mountain leader Felicity Turner who has been hiking the Peak District for many years and holds both mountaineering qualifications and a first aid certificate.

The Peak District National Park is the hill area in the county of Derbyshire in the centre of England. Steep limestone valleys like Dovedale, with its famed stepping stones, and Lathkill Dale characterise the park’s southern area, which is known as White Peak. North, the Dark Peak area has dramatic gritstone ridges and stark moorland plateaus like Kinder Scout, the park’s highest point.

The Peak District National Park was founded on 17 April 1951, the first national park ever to be created in the UK. It covers 555 square miles of the most beautiful parts of Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and even parts of Greater Manchester.

Introducing ‘Boot 🥾’ Levels

Our hiking adventures are classified into five levels, represented by ‘boot’ symbols, ranging from 1 Boot (easiest) to 5 Boots (most challenging). These levels indicate the difficulty of the hikes, with 1 Boot suitable for beginners who are comfortable walking on flat or gently sloping terrain, and 5 Boots reserved for those looking to tackle steep, rugged, and potentially high-altitude terrains requiring excellent physical fitness and prior experience.

Each level outlines specific hike characteristics, such as distance, elevation gain, and terrain type, helping participants select a hike that matches their fitness and experience level.

Our mountain guides, knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the beauty of their homeland, may adjust itineraries based on weather or terrain conditions, so a flexible attitude is essential. Daily briefings are provided each morning to go through the planned route. As we expand our offerings, we refine these Boot levels based on feedback, ensuring an enjoyable and appropriately challenging experience for all.

Day 2: Saturday 12th October – Hike Level 🥾

After a hearty breakfast, we will meet our mountain leader Felicity who will be leading our adventures for the weekend – I can’t cross the road without getting lost so I though I’d better ask someone who can show us some Peak District highlights!

We will head out on our first hike from Hartington Hall for a full day adventure taking a packed lunch with us.

Our route today starts from the charming Hartington Hall. The journey begins as you venture through the serene beauty of Biggin Dale, immersing yourselves in the tranquil natural surroundings. This path leads you to the Tissington Trail, a delightful, flat route perfect for leisurely strolling, as it follows the old railway line, offering scenic views and a relaxing pace. After enjoying the easy walk along the trail, you will then cut across the countryside, making your way back to Hartington Hall, completing a memorable and refreshing outdoor adventure. We will return back to Hartington Hall late afternoon where you will have time to shower and to relax in the library with a book.

Early evening you are then invited to join me in the bar for drinks before dinner in Hartington Hall.

Join me for a talk after dinner about my most recent expedition climbing Kilimanjaro and what it was really like to climb the highest freestanding mountain in the world!

On day two, we embark on a leisurely three-hour hike across the rolling hills of the Peak District, offering a perfect escape into nature’s beauty. Today’s walk will be of moderate difficulty, with some sections featuring short uphill climbs and reaching elevations of around 300 meters. These gentle ascents reward hikers with stunning views as you traverse a picturesque landscape of sweeping valleys, rugged moorlands, and charming stone-built villages. The well-trodden paths and fresh country air make this hike an ideal outing, offering a tranquil and refreshing experience for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers alike.
